Popping out of and not meshing Tranny (archive)

I just bought a '93 E34 M5 (83,000 miles)and under hard acceleration, it grinds going inti third gear or pops back out. I want to take the car to a track weekend soon, so I would appreiciate any suggestions. It has redline oil in the tranny and rear end.
