I may have used the wrong terminology.
The wheel's plastic hubcap (or centercap) easily snaps on the wheel when the wheel is off the car. When same wheel is bolted on front(rear is no problem) of e28, same centercap no longer snaps on same wheel.

People posted replies to my question on the e28 forum that they had the same problem and it was due to the fact that the e28 metal dustcap (that covers wheel bearing) is shaped something like this
/----\,
but the e34 dustcap is like this
/_--_\.

If I could post pictures of both metal dustcaps, it would be clear that only the e34 dustcap allows the "fingers" of the plastic centercap to engage.

One guy replied he used a dremel tool to whittle down the plastic fingers so they didn't come in contact with the metal dustcap.

Is this forum great or what? You post the most off the wall question, and people respond that the same thing just happened to them!
