hey there:

you could indeed drop the s38 into your 535, as the s38 block was based on the m30 powerplant. this is where the problem comes into play... the s38 out of the m5 weighs a hell of a lot more, and your gearbox is not even close to a viable option! the stock gearbox (getrag 280) out of the m5 is a close ratio sport gearbox, and will cost around $4000 from BMW. there is a conversion sold be Metric Mechanic (www.metricmechanic.com) that will convert a 265 to the dimensions of the m5, the bell housings are the same (minor differences, but the 265 will bolt right up to the s38). you would also need to get into altering the suspension geometry due to the added weight of your new friend, your driveshaft would need to be modified to work with the MM 265 (if you went this route, it costs about $3800 for their gearbox), your brakes would need some attention, and their is a whole slew of the "unknowns" that i can't even begin to list as i have never personally dropped M-power into a stock e34 535i. do know this, the m5 that you have is built on the same chasis as your 535. check with Frank Fahey Motorsports, this guy is absolutly amazing!!! (www.frankfaheymotorsports.com) he put this motor into a 325i... check April (???) 1999 edition of Bimmer magizine... this will give you a small idea of just how much fun it's going to be... and did anyone mention expensive????? mucho deniro!!! good luck, keep us posted!

and yes, you could in theory... put this motor into any of the cars you mentioned... it just depends upon how much money you have to spend, and what your resources are! the best option, the cheapest and probably easiest option would be the e34 5er, the 318 has a little 4 banger in it, and would need EXTENSIVE front end re-building to balance the weight addition. the e36 wouldn't be as bad as the 318, as it came with a 6 cylinder from the gitgo!

goodluck:)
