Wandering Steering (archive)

My 1991 M5 has a slight wandering problem with the steering. This is especially noticeable on the highway, where minute, precise steering input sometimes has no effect on the direction of the car.

My dealer has checked all the suspension components and says everything is fine. Nothing is worn or needs replacing. The thrust rod bushings are new. They re-checked the pre-load on the steering. They said the steering box can not be adjusted any more without risking damage. The shop foreman has even driven the car with me.

I also had Autothority perform an alignment. Everything is set to spec. Also, Michelin Pilot Sports are new with about 7000 miles on them.

I drove a 1993 M5 last week for comparison. The steering on that car was perfect, and drove the way an M5 should. In fact the steering on my old 1987 535i, while not as quick on turn in, was more precise than the M5 at this point.

What could the problem be? Could it be the steering idler arm, or something else?

Thanks
