My '90 Euro E34 M5 has a dead tachometer and a very "lazy" speedometer. My guess is that these are electronic guages and that they run off a circuit board in the guage cluster like the E30 3 series cars. On the E30 3 series cars the guages also die-out when the back-up battery on the circuit board expires.

Can anyone indicate if the E34 M5 has the same type of circuit board, and if so has any one replaced the battery on one of the boards? The E30 ones can be fixed for about $10.00 with Radio Shack battery if the acid has not leaked out of the battery and damaged the board.

Any suggestion about the dead tachometer, sluggish speedo and any repair tips are appreciated.
