Could either anyone of you guys teel me if you sometimes have a problem getting the car into gear during spirited driving? I've been having that problem lately, and as far as I know, the clutch has never been replaced in my M5. It currently has 153K miles, which I purchased it at 84K. I have new UUC Tranny Enforcers and Mounts coming, but could the stiff shifting just be due to an old clutch? Anyone who is reading this, have you had to replace a clutch before 84K, or anywhere around there?

Hi Dave,

You probably don't have much more to go. Sounds a little like my E23 just before its clutch went. My clutch was stiff for some time but was all the time not intermittenly. You probably have a few ball bearings turning occasionally that's why its normal sometimes. Once I lost all my bearings there was this horrible noise and more stiffness.

Once you replace your clutch and bearing you'll be amazed at how easy it is to push that pedal down.
apparently I had just gotten use to it and didn't realize how hard it was.
After changing my clutch, my girlfriend couldn't believe how easy it was nor could I. She then wanted me to change her M6's throwout bearing. I always thought her's was easy which I couldn't understand since I figured it had more clamping force.
After I replaced everything on hers Wow, her's was even easier to push than my E23's new clutch.

Just change it you'll be glad you did.

Good luck,

Winston

So, I'm driving on the 101 into the office, everything is smooth until I decide to jinx myself. As I thought, "Damn, what a great day - 65 degrees and sunny at 9 AM, pretty girls driving around me, U2 playing loud and clear, no shimmey, little or no brake dust on my rims," my clutch feels a little stiffer than usual shifting into 4th. Then normal. Then a little stiff. Then normal. You get the idea.

About 6k miles ago, my mechanic determined that my throw out bearing was dry. Since then, I have posted messages about the big day - i.e., what happens when the throw out bearing seizes. I know that I will hear a noise like no other and I will think that the drivetrain is about to fly up through the floor, but my question today is: how long has my clutch got to live????? The current ailments:

1) I can hear the bearing from 2,500 to 3,000 rpm. The window must be open to do this

2) The clutch squeaks when the pedal is depressed. I must be in the parking garage to hear this.

3) Mild stiffness (happened twice) when depressing the clutch.

Other than that, I'm cool. Sorry for the long message.

Thanks,
Dave
