Wheels, tires and camber plate questions (archive)

I have read through the archives, but still need help.

I joined the ///M club last November, a white '91 with Dinan chip, brake upgrade, and stage III suspension (still has self-leveling rear) and Mille Miglia Glide 8.5 x 17 wheels with 255/40R17 Sumitomo HTR's front and rear. I like the look of the wheels.

The car is a pleasure to drive, except that it is a real handfull on uneven roads. The idler arm is new and it has the machined-down 750 bushings.

I think the problem is the camber plates, although the wheel offset looks to be approximately 25mm and could be a contributing factor. My mechanic says if it was his car (he has a sweet M3), he'd put some light wheels and Yokohama AVS Intermediates (235/45R17) on it and use the stock camber plate. I am afraid that if I just replace the camber plates the front tires will rub or damage the fender.

Questions:

1) Will the 255's fit if I remove the camber plate?

2) What is the best tire size and make for dry traction? Should I go wider in the rear? (the rear got loose on a fast sweeper and I really didn't like it)

3) Should I lose the Glide wheels, and what do you recommend replacing them with? I don't like the way Throwing Stars look. Given I don't race the car (will go to driving school someday) and have the Dinan rotors/750 calipers I'm not sure I need their cooling. I like the way BBS RK and Mille Miglia MM11-2 look, functional and easy to clean.
