I find the M5 to be a screamer when launched from a light, revved and clutch dropped, the good traction and hefty weight of the car make it a great Banzai off the light racer. I find the poor torque of the E34 M5 and weight to hurt it when say cruising at 30 mph and punching it. Case and point, I raced my friends GT, underdrive pulleys, exhaust etc etc, about 260hp. When we are at a roll, he can pull on me when we both nail it, its pretty natural, his torque and power to weight ratio really helps him here but from a stop light, I can come out of the hole stronger and pull and easy car length and its keep pulling, the same with a Z3 2.8, brand new model. I raced him from a light, bye bye Z3 but when I tried to pull him from a roll from behind, he pulled on me, I was really surprised. I was behind my friends E30 M3 with mods and about 100 mph and it took a while to pass him and by the time I was passing him I was clocking nearly 140 mph, again.
I haven't been beat yet. I don't race light to light, as that is not what an M5 is about. There may be a few heavily leaned on domestics that can outrun it in a 1/4 mile, BUT I DON'T LIFT THERE.
I remember when the Buick Grand Nationals came out, and there was a big stink in the Corvette community about getting beat by GNs. The Corvette engineering team said flatly "Any Corvette that gets beat by a GN didn't race long enough!"
VERY few drivers are willing to go over 120 MPH on the street, something an M5 can do (with 30 MPH headroom) without effort. To beat virtually anything out there, just leave your foot down, and eventually the other guy will back off. Just make sure you have plenty of open road! Passing other cars with a 50 MPH closing rate FROM BEHIND is NOT COOL... :)
