The M5 I want to buy needs rebuilt transmission. The mechanic says it has to be done by BMW and it costs A LOT!!!

Well, it does cost a lot, but there are others besides BMW who can do it (I'm not sure even what your mechanic means: is he planning on shipping the trans back to Germany?).

Jim Blanton in Kansas City has made quite a rep. for himself rebuilding M5 transmissions. The previous owner of my car had him do it, and everything has been fine (trans-wise). (He's on the web somewhere, but I'd have to look it up.)
