I am buying this M5 with 170,000 km on it and the transmission is really notchy> I was told that it needs to be replaced or rebuilt. Anyone has any comment on this?

Thanks.

Have someone drain the transmission fluid and check for metal chips or filings in the oil. A small quantity is normal, but if the fluid looks
metallic, somethings wearing out. M5 gearboxes that we have replaced generally grind when changing gears, specifically 2nd. Try refilling the transmission with Redline MTL. If the trans is
any good it will shift better. Notchiness can also come from sagging motor and or transmission rubber mounts. Worn mounts will alter the geometry of the shifter and make shifting difficult. In our experience about 80% of M5s E28&E34 will need gearboxes at around 120K miles. If that's the original box in that car, it's running on borrowed time. Let us know if you need a gearbox, we sell completely rebuilt units with a 3 year warranty for $2800 including your core. We currently have a used gearbox in stock from a 1991 with 60k miles for $1500. Good Luck!

Mike
