Low Coolant (archive)

My computer display was reading Low Coolant Owner's Manual.
Well I just purcahsed a '91 ///M5 E34 and I don't have an Owner's Manual.
It could just be the coolant level is low because I haven't checked it. But there was also a strong warm or hot "coolant type smell" around the car's front end. The car was not showing that is was hot. Also, I did not smell anything inside the car even with the heat on.
Any advice would be greatly appreaciated. I would also like to get my hands on an Owner's Manual, as I have a service manual.
