My '93 3.8 has a mysterious knob on the dash. It can be turned into six different positions, and when turned to the far left, an LED lights up. The wiring goes to the computer under the hood, where it is plugged into a smallish aluminium case, which is hooked up in the wiring harness af the computer. Since this one come out of a bankruptcy case, asking the previous owner is not an option. I have taken the car to the BMW/Alpina dealer, and they don't know. They suggested accelerating full blast in second gear with the knob in different positions, but I can't tell the difference. The car goes like a rocket, but then, don't they all? I suppose it is normal for the idle to be a bit rough, also.

What could this box be? Sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks for any help
