How much can a cat eat (archive)

Need to pass CA smog.. But failed with high HCs ( 151 and max is 120). The engine has about 117k miles. Cylinder 5 has high HC ( about 1000 ) and has a slight compression leak. I do not want to go through the expense of an engine rebuild. I was wondering if a new cat( possibly aftermarket ) would eat enough to pass smog. Any thoughts?
