In Reply to: Euro M5's, please read posted by Euro M5 owner on June 07, 2001 at 18:55:48:

I have seen their work, and I know the primary people.......in charge. But to buy a vehicle from any company at the prices on the market is not worth it. Why not buy from germany direct at 1/3 the price and just pay shipping and conversion fee. Trust me you will still come out cheaper! Trust me I have imported a 90 M5:
Cost $3975 USD
shipping $950 USD
conversion $3500 USD

Total out of pocket including price of the car

$$$$8425 USD....

My M5 104,500 miles, no dents rust rips or tears
immaculate condition. 1 owner very clean with books, and documentation..... appraised @ $22,000 and insured for $35,000 full coverage there are some good deals buying direct Trust me on this guys.....

To all euro M5 seekers,
Thanks to JB for the response. You're only scratching the surface of what it all really entails.
I've refrained from writing a response to all of Pat's posts even though the misinformation and ridiculousness he's been writing has caught my attention a few times. I've been through the process, and can tell you straight away that it costs considerably more than he claims. I was fortunate enough to have spent months in Europe, and while there, fit in the time to look at a lot of M5's. 2 out of 3 would not have passed the grade, required paintwork, high miles, worn compenents, shady dealers. Many people there think nothing of running their nice Mercedes and BMW's through automatic car washes with plastic brushes. (it made me cringe everytime) Ask yourselves if you really have the resources to buy one yourself direct. Do you trust someone or a dealer enough to buy one overseas sight unseen? If you do, then you may end up with a rusty damaged car like Pat's Alpina. Do you have the time to go to Europe and the capabilities, language skills, logistical organization, and mechanical expertise, to make sure you don't get a roach? What many people in Europe call a "clean" car woundn't normally be a 3 on a scale of one to 10. What about when it gets here and fails the epa tests consistently? Pat?.. Then are you willing to wait the many months required to really have the car certified correctly? And I don't mean inaccurate paperwork filed, since the DOT and EPA can recall the cars virtually anytime to have them inspected and retested-I mean to have it done correctly. Airbags, structural items...Pat?...
The costs listed in the referenced post doesn't even cover the costs of bonds and insurances required, even a part of the DOT conversion, much less the surface of what it takes to do the epa portion correctly.
No one, and I mean no one, in Germany or any other Northern European country sells M5's for anything close to what he claims unless it has seen better days, has many more miles than 100,000, (that is, before it crosses the Atlantic)unless it won't pass the TUV inspection for emissions, or other component wear, or unless the paint and interior is ready for refurbishment. Furthermore, the old days of slipping some in based on loops are gone.
Those of you out there that seek the truth about what it costs to federalize one correctly, make sure you know the whole process before you think about jumping in.
And Pat, if you continue to grossly exaggerate the facts, then I would suggest you provide proof of what you claim. Since I do have more questions...Including making your cars available for inspection to us curious ones out here, paperwork, etc....-by the way, you wouldn't know where I can get an imitation Rolex would you?
