Car and Driver did a head to head caomparison of the E34 M5 and E500 way back in April 1992. Numbers as follows:
0-60 0-100 1/4 mile
M5 5.6(s) 14.7 14.3@99 mph
500E 5.5(s) 13.8 14.1@101 mph

Overall, C&D chose the M5 over the 500E.
