I have a friend with a 91 M5, his daily driver, that he bought new in 1991, has 117K miles. He loves the car, but bought a new Porsche. It has been garaged/parked under cover its whole life. It's Black/Black with the 93 M5 Wheels. Condition of the interior is immaculate, with VERY minor wear on the driver's seat bolsters. Exterior condition is excellent, especially considering the age, though there is some minor road rash up front, and the gray lip on the frond spoiler needs to be touched up or repainted. He has changed oil frequently. Tires are two month old Bridgestone Potenza's, front brake pads & rotors look to be fairly fresh.

Now for the questionable items:

1. There is leakage from the transmission. The tech that has done some of the service says it involves detent seals, and that most of these cars leak to some degree. This one leaves no drips, but there is enough leakage that after an interstate run it can be readily smelled when I exit the car, and one can see on the exhaust where it accumulates. The tech says don't worry about it, just top up the tranny at each oil service. He quotes $400-$600 to repair, depending on whether the tranny has to come completely out of the car.

2. I note some rot in the exhaust system at the front of the rearmost muffler, both in the seams around the pipes and the muffler itself, though I can't feel any leakage when the car is running. Is this something that could take a while before it needs replacement, or would there be a rear exhaust in my very near future? Any idea of cost or aftermarket alternatives?

3. Rear brakes and rotors are very nearly worn out.

4. The car drives great, but seems a little bouncy over some bumps, and I wonder if that's the nature of the car or if the self leveling rear suspension is failing, or if shocks are just worn - I don't think they've been replaced. I may just be paranoid here, because I have heard of problems. At rest, the top of the rear tires are up under the rear fender lip about an inch, give or take a bit. How can I check this?

We are talking about a price of $14,500. It could be a little high according to Edmund's considering these items, but I also know that good clean M5s of this vintage are often listed for $20K or better. The question is what they actually sell for. I would appreciate the opinion of the board on these items and on the price. Thanks.
