Yesterday while going up a hill on the way home something happened in the car to make it shudder terribly while giving it gas. I am unable to tell if it is an engine or tranny problem though due to the fact the both are having syptoms. The car has a little more lump in the idle, but the second I give it gas (sitting or moving) the car shakes like crazy and hits this harmonic tone that sounds like the car is its own bass tube. The funny thing is though that all of the guages read the same, gas mileage is the same, and power is down a LITTLE, but this is where I think the tranny comes in.

I have been having problems with spirited shifting for the past 6 months, possibly due to bad synchros or clutch (I hope, as far as I can tell it is original). Even after flushing with different types of Redline, and then sticking with regualr dyno oil, I've been experiencing problems getting the car into second gear unless I let the revs drop a little before going faster, but it never happens consistantly. Now that the car is shuddering the way it is, I have to pry the thing into gears R, and 1-3 just to get it to move. Now the car also feels like it might be hitting a tooth before it actually falls into gear, which I never had with until I put in the Redline (that is why I chose the dyno oil). My question is this:

Could something like the flywheel or clutch plates/disk cause the car to shake like this, even though it happens while the car is sitting still or driving.

When I run the compression test, what kind of numbers am I looking for, and will this type of test tell me if i have any bent valves at all, or do I have to definately get a leakdown done too.

Any ideas would be great!
