I have a problem with a noisy fifth gear, apparently the case hardening has started to wear off. Therefore, I am looking to re build the gearbox. After contacting BMW Australia, I was surprised to find that their quote was in the vicinity of $7000AUD to supply the cluster, most gears, and bearings.

I interested to know if anyone knows of a cheaper alternative to the one offered by BMW or whether they have experienced a similar problem. I am desperate to get my car back on the road. Are Getrag in a position to supply the necessary parts ?
