If you can get US plates before you arrive in North America it would be helpful. When I drove my
legally converted car with german plates on front and Alaska ones at rear across the USA/Canadian and Canadian/Alaska borders last May no one asked me about the car. I did need to show proof of conversion when I had the State polution check done. It might be possible to get a transit permision from the Canadian govt. from the Port of entry to the USA
