I live midstate in Illinois. We don't get the lake effect snow that parts of Chicago do, but in general they keep the roads plowed. Basically a Mayor that can't keep the roads open doesn't get re-elected (this is for real).

So, the issue is ice, not deep snow. I run siped mud tires on my Tahoe with great success. I ran Pirelli snows on my CRX, as well as Yokohama 509's, a dry grip tire. They sell a tire locally called Wintermaster (also at Tire Rack) that looks very good. Any all-season or winter tire will do.

You're not thinking of driving an M5 in a midwest winter are you? If so, forget the snows, just buy an $800 front wheel drive beater. Why?

1) Rear wheel drive and ice patches don't mix, especially with the high-bias limited slip these cars have.
2) Salt kills cars.
3) Idiots will crash into you.
