Thanks Neil. I actually have a euro E28 M5. The E28's have a reputation of warping front rotors (although I have not, even in the advanced run groups in drivers schools). I am considering putting the E34 wheels on the car but didn't want to develop problems.
I believe most guys switch to the 'fan' covers for track days for the additional cooling... certainly for street driving the 'throwing stars' are fine. I've used the throwing stars on the track with so-so results, but I can face it -- I'm not that fast. :)A buddy of mine's E28 M5 suffered the constant warping problem... he has since sold it for other reasons.
At the time we were researching solutions, we came across this FAQ which mentions a special hub cover to redirect air and save your rotors. Don't know if that helps or not. :)
