Dan:

Check out http://www.bmwe34m5.com for an FAQ that I, among others, edit. Also, check out my site, http://www.neilwerke.com, for some M5 information. For more information, join the E34 M5 E-Group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bmwe34m5.

M5 were made till 95, brought into the US (by BMW) till 93. From 92- you could buy a 3.8L, 340 HP car in Europe.

Note that the M5 is high-maintenance, both corrective and preventive. I do all my own repairs so this is less of an issue, but it is tough to find specialized help for the car, particularly the engine and tranny, w/o spending big buck, having the car down for a long time, etc. I'm in the midst of a top-end rebuild and it is about 1 month now and I'm a week from being done. Time to get information, rent special tools, get an accurate diagnosis, etc., etc. However, it is a durable car, will last to 200k miles easily and in good shape with maintenance and, at the prices they command, they are a good deal for just more than a new Camry!

If you don't have an extra car, you'd better have lots of money!

I am looking into buying an E34 M5. Can anyone give me some extensive information on this car. I have been to a couple sites and got very confused. They were saying that the M5 lasted until 95. I though it was around 92. I also thought that the M5 'only' had 315 hp all the way around but some sites say it was increased to 340. Some sites say this increase and extension of years was only in Europe and not the U.S. If anyone can give me a link to a good site with specs, etc., that would be much appreciated. Also, any info on common problems or things to watch for when buying an E34 M5. I'd like to know everything I can about this car.
Thanks, Dan.
