transmission problem !! Please help (archive)

I have a '92 euro E34 M5 3.8 litre 340 hp that currently rattles when I drive it slowly(10-40 km/h) with/without the clutch engaged. It almost sounds like a some kind of bearing.
I have changed my tanny oil 2 month ago to Drextron III. My mechanic said I have to replace the whole transmission to a new one. Is it tranmission synchros problem???? Any thoughts?
