My daughter had a similar problem when she was back in Rome driving our M5 Touring a while ago.
A huge ticking noise so loud it was embarassing
while driving the car.
Our mechanic diagnosed it was the electronic box governing the engine.
This was immediately changed at a cost and the problem was solved.
Our car never stopped however
