I bought an 91M5 which has a shift kit installed and its way too high effort, im removing it. On the other hand, have a uuc in an A6 and its not very high effort at all. These vary greatly and by trans. Im not sure about the stress on synchros as its all about how you shift and feel your way around with or without a kit.

shifts are way shorter and have helped tremendously in track driving. I set mine on the highest possible height to make it as easy as possible. The M5 trans has big gears which makes it even more difficult than most ss kits. Newer cars have smoother (girlie-man) transmissions. Although I drove and S4 with a UUC shortshift and thought the feel just sucked. If the stock one is worse, I literally woulnd't buy the car for that reason alone. I guess it is a symptom of the linkage necessary in a car that is basically designed as fwd.
