the 535i transmittion will bolt upto the engine ok, but the whole gearbox is about 1 inch shorter than the stock M5 unit.

Perhaps we're talking about different age/variants but we've just replaced a '90 535is engine with a '91 M5 engine and the original box and prop fit perfectly.
