The M5 engine is strong, even durable, but not reliable, IMHO. There are a number of things in it that can go wrong . . . or not.

I am going to look at a low mileage 94 M5 Touring in Germany. I have seen so many ads for M5's with "new engine" that I am worried about the reliability of the engine. What are the sympoms of an M5 engine about to expire?
