Possible, but not practical. You're looking at 15+ hours of labor. The transmissions that would fit are the 530's 5-speed and the 540's 6-speed. I'm not sure I would trust the 5-speed to handle the 540's extra 67hp and 81ft-lb. Used 6-speed transmissions are extremely hard to find, and pretty expensive ($2k-$3k). You'd also have to get a new flywheel, pedal assembly shifter console, and driveshaft (not to mention, clutch, master/slave cyl.'s).

You're probably looking at at least $6000 to convert to a 6-speed. Chances are you could sell your 540iA and buy a 540i/6 for less than the cost of the conversion.

'94 530iT soon to have a 6-speed and maybe a 4.0 too

How possible/practical is it to replace the automatic trans in a 94 540 with a 5 or 6 speed? Are the bellhousings the sam dimensionally? Any help is appreciated...
