i just bought a 91 3.8L euro w/ 60,000 miles. the car has been babied all her life. the tranny is actually a 93, the owner upgraded a lot of things on the car and that was one of them. but for some reason there was a 2nd gear synchro issue that from what i hear seems to be a common problem in most M5's. it is expensive ($2500) but well worth it and if you have to get it done go to Jim Blanton. he is one of the few who really know whats going on with these machines ! it is super solid now and i shouldnt have any issues in the future if i take care of her. goodluck !
