I am the owner of a 1991 BMW E34 M5 attempting to rebuild the 280 transmission (with great difficulty being in Australia). A major problem is obtaining parts and I was wondering whether anyone would be able to assist. As an alternative, if parts or a gearbox are not to be found is there a satisfactory alternative transmission?

Look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Is there a tariff on importing parts from Germany or the US?? If you can get away with small packages, that's all you'll need. Jim Blanton rebuilds the 280 here in the 'States for about $2500 in parts and labor, so maybe he could help you with getting the necessary parts. He upgrades the synchros and may also have better shift forks and dogs. I believe he is available at:

I've read horror stories of engine and other parts nightmares in Australia. Good Luck!

The only viable gearbox alternative is the Getrag 265 from an E30 M3 or early E28 535i. It is almost as mong as the 280, and can handle a good amount of torque. The M5 puts out a lot of torque, so it eats up weaker gearboxes.
