However the noise you hear on shutdown is the Air Vents automatically closing themselves inside the dash. It also does it when you start the car and drive away.
You might want to try posting on the e34 Board, where there are more members, they may be able to help more.

I helped a dear friend (a lovely Australian lady) find a used BMW. I purchased for her, a very nice 1990 model 525i in Alpine White. She loves the car but called me last night after her first long drive in it, to ask about a noise. She said, "There is a noise that is a bit like a very quiet rattlesnake rattle, which comes on for four seconds and off for eight seconds. Then on again for four seconds and off for eight seconds and it just continues that constantly while the car is driving. It seems to be coming from inside the dashboard." I told her that my hearing is not perfect and that (along with most crickets songs) I probably simply could not hear it. She said that she turned the radio on to be able to ignore it.
Can anyone please give me a clue?
When I was driving the car. I did notice that when the car is turned off after a drive, there is a very quiet noise from somewhere under the dash area, somewhat like a small motor sound for a few seconds and then it settles or resolves and goes quiet.
PLEASE? Any ideas?
