I launch the torqueless-wonder stock E30 M3 at 4000 RPM, which happens to be the torque peak. I launch my E28 M5 at 3000-3500. Of course this is bad for the clutch.

I have no timeslips to back this up, though. Only seat-of-the-pants feel.

Also try to shift while only lifting the throttle a little. This will keep the engine spinning but it won't peg the redline between shifts.
