I would guess that BMW did it to increase fuel economy in the US for the late 92 and 93 cars (I think the EPA rating went up 2-3mpg with the 3.73 vs the 3.91). The rest of the world got the 3.91 for all years, both 3.6ltr and 3.8ltr, until the 6-speed was introduced in 1995.
