Cor:

The belts should be replaced to prevent an inconvenient failure.

Yes, they can run indefinitely, but I once stopped to help a guy who lost a water pump belt on his E30 318i. What I saw was so messy I left w/o getting my hands dirty. That, and a slipping belt will glaze your pulley and prevent the new belt from gripping and you'll have all kinds of noises. Rough up with sandpaper to fix this.

At 144k miles with you original-belts maintenance policy you should also do the following:
1. Coolant hoses, at least the radiator ones
2. Fuel hoses, including those near the fuel filter in the rear of the car. I have found these leaking at 90k and the owner oblivious.

The belts look ok and there are no noticeable problems. Will a new set of belts give me a better feel when driving? While my mechanic is in there should anything (parts) else be replaced?
