The air pump will be noiser if:
1. The bearing on the pump are failing.
2. The vacuum actuator that opens the air pump line is broken/stuck causing the pump to vent to atmosphere via relief valve.
I have seen both and a good pump working first-hand.

I am regretably selling my M5 (new house wife ect). the buyer is concerned over the somewhat loud drowning noise on coldstart from the engine pump (that is what the mechanic called it). The noise ceases once the cold start program ends. My questions are: Is this noise normal? what exactly makes the noise? What effort and parts are involved in the replacement?
TIA,
