Just went through the same thing after buying a '91 M5 which had an unknown shifter installed. It was a joke, very hard to get into first and second. Replaced it with the UUC and got the cartridge bearing and delrin bushing upgrade extras and love it. Much better. Second car with UUC and highly recommend.
