I had an 88 535is (E28) and am interested in getting an E34 with the assumption that it's a little newer so it will be less maintenance. What would be my best bet for a reliable, low maintenance BMW?

What about the 540? Is it reliable? I heard of engine problems on the early models due to sulfur. When did that get taken care of?
