My father owns a 2000 E39 M5 and I have owned a 1993 E34 M5 (along with 2 E39 M3s and 3 E30 M3s). I currently own a 1995 E34 540i Sport (an M5 with a V8) and a 1999 540iA Touring.

The biggest difference between the M5s is that the E39 has gobs of torque. You don't have to work to make the car go fast. The E34 is fast but you must consciously drive the car. The E39 is so powerful that you just step on the gas and it goes. I find myself using 3rd and 5th only in the E39. The other difference is the interior. The E39 is so much more comfortable, modern, and easy to live with on long trips (NY-FL), and to use as daily transport.

But I do think that the E34 is a sportier looking car and it feels lighter and more tossable. It is also more fun to drive.

To finish, you can buy 3 E34 M5s for the price of a new E39 M5. If money is no object I would buy the new car. If you are a collector or a real enthusiast then the choice is clear. E34!

I hope I have helped
Peter M
