Dennis, I had similar symtoms on the right rear of my '91 M5; hopefully yours is as superficial of a problem as mine was...mine was simply the outer tubular-shaped shock absorber housing rubbing up against the interior surface of the (strut) spring..so it would cause intermittent clunk/rub/scrape/skid type noise as the RR suspension assembly telescoped up and down..symptoms varied with temperature since friction between the two surfaces would change based on humidity/temp....I solved my noise (at least for 9 months now) by glopping some maroon axle grease on the interior rungs of the spring..i used it sparingly since i don't know if there's any potential corrosive effect to the grease if it splashes onto brake hose, tire beneath it?? good luck, Damian. After a long run with my M5, I noticed on the road, and when pulling slowly into my driveway, that there is a "clunk" noise coming from the left rear suspension. The noise can be duplicated by kneeling up and down on the rear seat and occurs on very smooth surfaces. Any ideas what could be the cause? The shock shows no sign of leakage. The car has very low miles but of course is a '93! Rubber boots on differential look fine. Thanks for any help. Dennis.
