1995 525i (e34) fuel pump whine? (archive)

I am looking to purchase a 1995 525i, 96,000 miles 5spd.
Has many door dings, somewhat worn interior, single owner vehicle that runs great. Owner willing to accept $11,500.
There is a very noticable high pitch whine coming from the rear. Is this typical? is it the fuel pump? exhaust?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
