My guess would be variable reluctance, but you could go on the E34 M5 E-Group and ask Eric Christie. He rebuilt his motor and more than likely had a chance to see if there was a magnet in there or not. Hall Effect sensors have a magnet, right?
A look at the ETK suggests that it is a variable reluctance type. There does not seem to be place for a magnetic ring on the camshaft, sprocket, etc., nor is there a ring in the ETK.

Does anyone know if the cam sensor that came on the 3.8l engine (euro only?) was a variable reluctance type similar to the crank sensors or a Hall effect type? I am considering using on an S14 engine. TIA
