Hey guys..greetings from the e39 board...got a question. How is the performance/handling of the e34 M5 compared with the e39 540 6 speed. Currently have a 540i/6 and am thinking about looking for an e34 M5. Is performance handling about the same, or is the e34 M5 alot faster and more nimble. Thanks

When the first E-34, 540/6 speed was released the initial impressions were the M5 was the preference due to the refined suspension and engines power bandwidth. BMW did offer a limited number of 540 M-Sports that used the M5 suspension & brake package.
The M5 is aggressively primitive, high strung and you feel it!!
The biggest difference is the engine sounds, the V8 just isn't aggressive sounding while the aggressive snarl from the S38 is music. I love the sound of a solid lifters valve train.

After that it is pretty much a toss-up.
