As Neil responded, the two cars have very different character. It is difficult to drive the M5 quickly as one needs to be in the correct gear. The M5 is more highly strung and much more expensive for service as it has a slightly detuned race motor. The 540i is a quiet cruiser with plenty of power.


I'm considering my next BMW purchase. I have it narrowed down between a 97-98 540i or a 1993 M5. Any comments for or against either? Thanks for any input.
