I drove a friends 98 540i with sport package and 6 speed. The shift points were way too low for my taste. M5 is superior in that respect.
Rob C:

1. The 93 M5 is more of an exotic and has the nicer engine sound and much more linear (rising with RPM) power curve that I like.

2. The M5 is going to be much more expensive to maintain. And, it is the older car.

3. The E39 chassis is far superior, IMHO.

4. There are certain advantages for some drivers from DSCIII and other E39 features.

Unless you're sold on the M5 I would suggest you get the E39.

I'm considering my next BMW purchase. I have it narrowed down between a 97-98 540i or a 1993 M5. Any comments for or against either? Thanks for any input.
