I have a '91 M5 3.6, and have not driven an E39 540. There are 2 things to consider here - your head and your heart. The fact that you have the M5 on your list leads me to think that secretly that's the one you want, but you know the 540 makes more sense.

If you are an individual, then think about the number of anonymous 540 lookalikes you see on the road. I think the M stands out pretty clearly.

If I wanted to persuade you, a long burst of acceleration in 2nd gear from 4500rpm with the windows down should do the trick...
