I to own a 91 euro 3.6L m5 and yes they are expensive to maintain but hey you only live once ! If you can find a good mechanic its not so bad. The 540 will most likely be serviced at a dealer, which is not fun to deal with. You do NOT want to bring a e34 m5 to a dealer, from my experience they are complete morons ! Anyway, if you can take a drive in a m5 like Rich said open the windows, put her in 2nd and get her over 4000 rpms, you will probably then decide. I agree the m5 stands out, I live in LA and have seen maybe 3 e34 m5's my whole life where as i see atleast 3 e39's in the first 5 minutes i drive to work every day.
