Check the following thread: The same comments apply to the 540i Vs M5, except with the E34 540i you do not have the chassis improvements of the E39 540i. I do not know the acceleration figures, but I suspect they are very close 0-60 mph due to traction limitations. The M5 probably tops out faster due to the higher HP, but you may never discover this. I like the way the M5 power builds more than the humped nature of the M60/M62 curve. Pricing for a 3.6L US M5 would be $18-25k depending on what you were looking for. A 15k 540i would be in the same condition as an 18k M5 more than likely. Due to the rarity of these cars, it is tough to fix pricing accurately, however. Neil Deshpande P.S. Unless you really like the M5 get the 540i for its lower maintenance and greater practicality. *** I've been looking at E34 540i's for a little while, and am just about ready to buy. However, a thought occurred to me earlier today -- why not at least look at an M5? I had never really looked before because I had heard a couple people say that the 540i actually has better acceleration because of the V8, but this doesn't sound right for an M car. I know I am asking a biased crowd, but the M5 must be quicker -- and better;) --, no? Additionally, I was prepared to spend about 15-18k on a clean 94-95 540i -- if I were to raise my sights to the M5, what kind of a price difference would I see? Also, I would not have to worry about the Nikasil issue, right? I'm just looking for some advice, if anyone has any to offer.
