I am told by my tracking friends that the E34 M5 handles like an E36 M3 with about 200lb over the front axle. More understeer. Other than that, those that push these cars have told me that the handling is surprisingly close for a car that is so much heavier.

My own comments:

1. The M3 is lower maintenance.
2. The M3 has nicer steering (rack vs box).
3. The M3 has a stiffer chassis=better handling at speed and better feel when slow.
4. The M3 has more in the aftermarket if you're into that.

Other comments like availability, etc., are obvious.

I just sold my Sport Evolution and need a 4 door car. It looks likely to be either an M5 3.8 or M3 3.2. I am looking for performance figures for both cars but have been unable to find much meaningful information. a direct comparison between the two would be handy.
