exceeding 7000RPM!! (archive)

the other day, according to my tachometer, I actually hit 7000 RPM in my 525i...and then the tach swung around to maybe 12,000 and then all around...(no, I didn't blow my engine). I thought Linda Blair had gotten into it for a second...

It did return to normal after I turned the car off and restarted it, but I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this and if it has gotten worse and worse for that person.

Also, if it is flaking somewhere, any ideas on what the ramifications would be - ie - does the computer use this information or does the computer tie into some other sensor system?
