The chassis is the same. The suspension is what is different and that can probably be retrofitted. The 97 540i IS the E39 body style. If you get the body kit you can covert the 540i to look exactly like the M5. In fact, this is an option in Europe (and maybe in the US) for the lesser cars. The headlamps too can be replaced. Bekkers, etc., have kits.

hi.. I would like to know if 97 540i has the same chassis design compare to M5 (E39). Is it possible to convert 97 540i to E39? (I don't have enough money to buy E39 but I really like the way it looks.) Second question is about the headlights.. Can I replace 97 540i headlights with the newer (2001) lights? (b/c the new lights look very amazing!) Thanks very much for your input..
